5 Team Building Activities to Boost Employee Morale

Two keys to happy employees are a positive workplace culture and good peer relationships. Whether your company is prospering in these two areas or you could use some help, team building events are a great way to give your employees a boost. Team building activities can help your team get to know each other better, learn how to collaborate, and pick up some new problem-solving techniques they can take with them back to the office. These types of events have been proven to improve everything from creativity and communication to motivation and morale.

Learn Something New

A great way to help your team get to know one another better, is to take them out of their comfort zones by learning a new skill together. Take your team to a class that is completely outside of the realm of what you do in the office every day. Try painting, ceramics, salsa dancing, archery, or even beer-brewing. Aim to choose an activity that everyone can participate in but that is also new to the whole team. 

Infuse a Little (Strategic) Friendly Competition

Personalities really shine through in the heat of a competition, so activities where your team members can compete against one another are great for team building - especially if the competition involves strategy. For example, host a culinary challenge where your team has to divide into groups and create a dish from a mystery ingredient. Or, have groups compete to see who can get out of an escape room the fastest. Having your employees flex their strategy muscles while also participating in a fun challenge makes for a fantastic team building activity. 

Play Games

Who doesn’t love a good game? Games are one of the most versatile team building activities because there are so many options to choose from. Plus, they are engaging, motivational and just plain fun. Try building your own game show based off of a classic favorite, going on a scavenger hunt, or playing a good old-fashioned game of tug-of-war. Another fantastic benefit of games is that you can use them as teaching tools. For instance, set up a trivia game with questions about your industry or products that will allow your team to learn while they play.

Speed Networking

You’ve heard of speed dating, but have you heard of speed networking? This activity has the same basic premise as speed dating, but rather than spending a few minutes with one person and then moving to the next, individuals spend an allotted amount of time with one group completing an activity before moving onto another group to complete another activity. With each rotation, individuals share new experiences with new groups, getting to know different people and learning how to collaborate in new ways in a very short period of time. 

Give Back

Giving back to the community is a fantastic way to not only bond with your team, but to also help out those in need. Plus, volunteering is an instant mood booster. Get your team together and help pack weekend meal bags for underprivileged school children, build homes with companies like Habitat for Humanity, help out at a pet shelter, or volunteer at a soup kitchen. There are endless opportunities to help people in need in your community while also getting to know your team members in a different way. 

Have Some Fun

An excellent option for team building is just to get out of the office and do a fun activity together. Go on a fishing excursion, take a ghost tour, go bowling, visit a museum or attend a sporting event. A casual experience that your team can enjoy together will allow them to get to know one another outside of the boundaries and formalities of an office setting.
